Before I became a parent, I had all these dreams of what kind of parent I was going to be. I had expectations on how they were going to behave, groom themselves and relate to the rest of the world. I could easily judge other parents and I really disliked disrespectful behavior in public.
And then, I had a baby, and another. Then, they grew up. I realised very quickly that I could have all the dreams and desires in the entire universe, but that didn’t mean the children were going to do exactly as they were told. I remember the first time one of my children blatantly disrespected me. I was livid. I wanted him to conform to MY way, not realizing there were other ways to approach this.
After painful experiences and many lessons over the years, seeing other parents experience these challenges didn’t bother me anymore. I judged myself and others less. What had Changed?
